중간 점검

번역비평에 관한 포스트는 여기서 그만두어야겠다. 번역비평을 생각하자니 예를 들지 않을 수 없고, 그러자니 기존 번역 텍스트에서 끌어와야 하는데, 가만히 둘러보니 자칫 여러 사람들에게 못할 짓 할 것 같아서이다. 번역비평은 내 공책에 나 혼자만의 탐구로 계속하겠지만 블로그에는 올리지 않기로 한다. 비평의 준거가 마련되면 그 리스트만 간추려 올릴 생각이다.

이제부터는 원래의 의도를 상기하고, 시간 나는 대로 번역의 이론과 실제 theory and praxis 만을 생각해보려고 한다. 오늘은 비트겐슈타인의 한 마디만 여기에 옮겨 놓자.

한 언어를 다른 언어로 번역하는 것은 수학적인 과제다. 예를 들어, 서정시를 다른 언어로 번역하는 것은 수학 문제를 푸는 것과 매우 흡사하다.

Translating from one language into another is a mathematical task, and the translation of a lyrical poem, for example, into a foreign language is quite analogous to a mathematical problem.
